Congratulations To the UFT for Going to Bat for Francesco Portelos!(?)

Bloggers don't have breaking news. They have these "OMG"moments that they just have to share.

According to Francesco Portelos' Twitter account, the UFT sent a letter to the DOE asking that Portelos be sent back to the classroom. I haven't seen the letter, but if Francesco says so, then it must be true.

They don't really do that too often. That they did is worth a blog post.

It's also worth a thank you! Every time my union goes to bat for a teacher, they go to bat for the rest of us too (that's sort of how things work with unions). Moments like this make me proud to be a member of the UFT.

Francesco's tweet is below.

Francesco Portelos (@MrPortelos) tweeted at 6:53 PM on Tue, May 14, 2013: @nycdoenuts @uft sent letter.

  1. The parasites should have been in court months ago. Too little too late. No more than a pr move. They should be sued next. Bunch of ticks. It's time to break out the spray and flea collars.

  4. You must be an easy grader. The UFT sent a letter? They are covering their ass. This is so outrageous they have to show something. And if the DOE ignores the letter then what? The UFT wants to cover up the rubber rooms as much as the DOE and Portelos' constant reminders they still exist might be the one edge. It will take the DOE a long time to terminate Portelos and then still may not succeed. Certainly not by the time they are out of office and the gotcha lawyer squad comes under attack for vast waste of money (how about the UFT making a point of that?) So if there were any sense in Walcott's brain - instead of going around whining -- and don't think that his support for so many loser principals will be part of the unraveling of Tweed -- he should get this case off his docket ASAP. Both the UFT and DOE would benefit by having him back in the classroom.

  5. I noticed that...May 21, 2013 at 2:38 PM

The UFT pushes Chapter leaders to make sure to enforce the contract, to file grievances in a timely fashion if the CBA is violated, to join protests/rallies against the damaging DoE ed policies that are shoved down the throats of every educator.

Yet, they sat on the Portelos case and did nothing. The DoE blatantly violate the CBA and the MOA with respect to removing a teacher. Why wasn't the UFT more involved in this case? Isn't their motto "an injury to one is an injury to all"? Does this motto only apply to the union leadership?

I hope the UFT step up their game and put a good, fierce fight for this teacher. He deserves Justice!!!!

You know this reminds of the Maria Colon case.

    1. Hi
Sorry it took me so long to see your comment. I have to admit to not knowing the Mayor Maria Colon case. What's it about?
